Nikki’s Inbox: “I’m Scared to Change My Style and How People Will React”

:-)

–>

I’m Rae and I’m 15 years old. I noticed a lot of the other people on this site are a bit older, but sadly, girls my age are having fashion problems too. I’m 5’2 and definitely not getting taller, 48kg (105lbs, I think?) and have really, really tanned skin. I am struggling to find the right style for me and I need a bit of help because all my friends have really gone up their game in terms of fashion.

I notice how everyone compliments each other but no one really pays attention to my fashion as I usually wear leggings and sweaters. I would really like to try wearing skirts but I’m kind of scared of the change and how people would react. Also, my thighs are a bit thick and my calves are really thin so my body doesn’t really have the right proportions. My bust is also relatively large and if I wear something loose then it will make me look larger than I originally am. :/ I tend to wear black all the time because I’m not really sure about wearing colours that are too out there because it contrasts very much with my skin. I love a lot of the clothes in YesStyle and I really like K-pop idol style clothing (K-pop airport fashion is literally the best thing). I hope you can help me sort this out. :)

Rae, 15/Australia

You’re right that some of the people I feature here are older, Rae. I’ve had emails from girls as young as 10 and 11 years old, and even from folks who are 55 years and older, from all genders (check out last week’s advice to another Rae!). I try to pick reader questions that are relatable to more people.

I do wish you’d be a little more specific with your information, Rae. Vague descriptions like “really thin,” “sort of large” or “somewhat wide” will make it a bit harder for me to give suggestions. Is your bust large compared to your waist, like a 6 to 8-inch difference, or maybe just give or take 2 or 3 inches? To be a smarter shopper, take measurements of your body dimensions to avoid all that vagueness and guesswork. Maybe your thighs aren’t really thick but just perfectly average for your height and weight. Maybe you’re perfectly fine as you are!

Warm and Bejeweled

I know it’s spring in Australia right now so this is the perfect time to make noticeable changes to your wardrobe via color. Don’t let anyone else tell you but tanned skin is beautiful! I have light brown skin myself and I find myself gravitating towards ruby red, royal purple, emerald green and metallics like gold and bronze, and those are just a few examples! This site has pages upon pages of sample color palettes ranging from warm and cool to brights and pastels so you can get some color combination ideas. Start with one to three colors for your outfits, with one of them being something you wear often like blue or black jeans, or a simple ivory cardigan.

Structured and Fluid

If you wear something too large for your body, it makes you look even bigger. Wearing baggy sweaters will make your upper half look bigger, and leggings will only emphasize the difference between your thighs and legs. Instead of getting confused between covering and revealing body parts, figure out what are your best assets.

Since you mentioned your nice calves, opt to wear a knee-length A-line skirt or mini skirt. Hitting the knees means your thighs are covered as you wish while showing off your legs, even if you’re wearing tights. An A-line silhouette is also more structured and angular and also shows off a slim waistline.

For your upper half, please donate your baggy and boxy sweaters, sweatshirts and T-shirts. Instead, go for a more tailored look like shirts and blouses. Make sure to choose tops that have darts or seams on the bodice such as those at the bust or underneath. These details ensure you have a more defined shape.

Airport Fashion = Comfort + Statement

Airport fashion the way your favorite K-pop stars do it is totally feasible, Rae. It’s all about a comfortable, wearable outfit (because if you’re in an airport or airplane for hours, you want to be practically dressed), with a few statement pieces thrown in for good measure.

Instead of opting for plain black leggings, go for coated jeans or those with hints of lace, beads or metallic insets. That plaid shirt you plan to pair with those leggings? Pick those that have graphic prints at the back or front. You can also rock the spaghetti-strap dress trend with a light sweater or long-sleeved henley underneath with your leggings. For a topper, skip the usual denim jacket and go for a military style parka with shiny buttons or epaulettes. Finish with boots like Doc Martens, ankle or Chelsea boots.

Any of the pieces I just mentioned can be THE statement piece. Remember that you only need one or two to make your entire OOTD distinctive. Accessories like hats, eye-catching jewelry, shoes and bags will definitely add extra style points but I suggest you master the basic outfit first before adding anything else.

Lastly, don’t be afraid to try something new, Rae. Do it for yourself, to build your confidence in your still-changing body. Have courage to face the mirror each day and say “I love how I look today. I love myself!”

P.S. If you’re sending a question, please don’t forget to include any helpful information about your body type or shape, your tastes or personality. You can include a selfie (link only please) or a photo of your clothes (which I will never publish without pre-approval). Thank you!
